Welsh-born Davis began playing harmonica and accordion at the age of six, and later on guitar. After finishing school he moved to Birmingham where he studied German. That later earned him the nickname ‘professor’.
In 1963, in a cafe in Birmingham, he met Steve and Muff Winwood who were playing in a traditional jazz band. Davis persuaded them to join him and drummer Pete York as the Rhythm and Blues Quartet. The band mainly played R&B covers and took the name The Spencer Davis Group in 1964.
At the end of 1966, the group had several hits to their name, including Gimme Some Lovin in I’m a Man are the best known.
