British-Australian singer and actress Olivia Newton-John died Monday at the age of 73. She was best known for her role as Sandy in the movie Grease.

Newton-John became widely known for her role in the film Grease (1978). She played Sandy, the girlfriend of John Travolta’s character Danny. She also sang several songs with him in the film, of which You’re The One That I Want in Summer Nights were the biggest hits.

The British-born Newton-John, who also had an Australian passport, also scored many solo hits. The numbers I Honestly Love You (1974) in Physical (1981) earned her a Grammy for Best Song of the Year.

In 1992 she was told she had breast cancer, but she recovered. She went on to become a staunch activist for research into cancer and other medical conditions. She was also an advocate for the environment and animal rights.

The cancer later returned, in 2013 and 2017. At the last time, it was announced that the disease had spread further. It is not known whether cancer is also her ultimate cause of death.
