Singapore’s Minister of Transport Iswarin Faces Salary Cut Amid Corruption Investigation

【Caixin.com】Singapore’s political scene is full of turmoil. The first corruption case involving a high-ranking official since 1986 has made new progress. The monthly salary of Minister of Transport Iswarin, who was previously suspended due to corruption, was cut by 80%, from 55,000 Singapore dollars (approximately RMB 300,000) to 8,500 Singapore dollars (approximately RMB 46,000) per month until further notice. Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in Congress on August 2 that in order to continue to maintain a clean political system and to allow the people to continue to trust the People’s Action Party government, we must not conceal the facts and deal with issues openly.

This is the first case of corruption involving senior officials in Singapore in the past 40 years. Iswaren, the Minister of Transport of Singapore, was arrested by the Singapore Corruption Investigation Bureau (CPIB) on July 11 this year and asked to provide information on his contacts with Ong Beng Seng, executive director of Hotel Properties. After being arrested on July 11, the two were released on bail to assist in the investigation. They have not been charged or convicted. However, at that time, Lee Hsien Loong had instructed Yi Huaren to take an “absence” leave until the investigation was completed, and Xu Fangda, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Transport, would take over the post temporarily; Ren’s work as a member of parliament, such as interviewing voters.
