Singapore’s Covid Explodes Again, Breaks 11,000 Cases a Day

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia -Singapore reported another “explosion” of Covid-19 cases, Tuesday (28/6/2022). The country recorded 11,504 new cases of Covid-19, consisting of 10,732 local cases and 772 imported cases.

One death was also reported yesterday. The government reports the cause is complications.

The increase in cases had actually been predicted since the beginning of the month. In addition to the decrease in vaccine antibodies, the increase also occurred due to the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants which are now endemic in Singapore.

Collect Channel News Asia (CNA), according to the latest infection statistics on the Ministry of Health (MOH) website as of Tuesday evening, a total of 437 patients were hospitalized. A total of 36 patients required oxygen supplementation with 9 of them in the intensive care unit.

The BA.5 subvariant itself is estimated to have contributed to 40% of all Covid-19 cases in the past week. But the local Health Department confirmed the data showed symptoms were no more severe than the previous Omicron.

“Coupled with the high vaccination coverage of our population, the number of severe Covid-19 infections remains manageable,” the Health Ministry said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who is also co-chair of Singapore’s multi-ministerial Covid-19 task force, said his country did not need to tighten movements due to rising cases. However adjustments will be made “if necessary”.

He said cases were expected to continue to rise in the coming weeks. Although the current situation of the hospital remains stable.
