FAJAR.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The Singapore government has suspended imports of poultry from countries such as Japan (Saga, Ibaraki, Saitama and Kagoshima), the United States, Canada, France, Belgium and Germany.
The suspension was carried out due to the outbreak of bird flu. In fact, some cases were found to have been fatal.
In the Saga region, Japan, the local government has destroyed at least 40,000 birds on affected farms.
Entering winter or autumn, bird flu usually attacks Europe.
Bird flu itself is not a new epidemic. Avian influenza (H5N1) is a disease caused by influenza.
This disease is called highly pathogenic and can spread easily or Highly Phatogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). This disease can occur in birds, wild fowl, and even humans.
So, when did this outbreak start to be reported? The following is an explanation from an Internal Medicine Specialist, Prof. Dr. Zubairi Djoerban.
This case was first reported in 2003 by Vietnam. This case has caused an epidemic and infected humans and resulted in deaths.
It was reported that at least 15 countries in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa had cases of deaths due to the bird flu outbreak. 603 cases were reported, 356 of which were deaths.
In 2006, H5N1 cases continued to spread to the Eastern Mediterranean region. Iraq, Egypt, Djibouti and Pakistan confirmed human transmission of H5N1.
In April 2022, America reported a case of a positive person infected with H5N1. Cambodia also in February this year reported infection with the H5 clade 2.3.2.1c virus, which has rarely occurred in humans in the past. This variant is different from the H5 virus which causes bird and poultry outbreaks in the United States.
