Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has spoken out about Russia’s war in Ukraine. He thinks it will have a wide influence in the world and in Singapore.
“And the battle is likely to last long enough,” he said on Channel News Asia (CNA)quoted on Sunday (1/5/22).
The move by the US and NATO countries to increase the supply of weapons and military aid to Ukraine will further exacerbate the fighting. Moreover, Russia saw the war as a struggle against many Western countries, and even declared that there was a real danger of World War III.
“The longer the war continues, the greater the risk of conflict increases,” he stressed.
Peace, he said, would remain elusive even if a ceasefire could be negotiated. Today, the war is not only between Russia and Ukraine anymore, but rather the “relationships” between Russia and the countries that support Ukraine.
“Most fundamentally, Russia’s attack on Ukraine has undermined the global order which is the basic rules and norms for countries large and small to properly interact with one another,” Lee added.
“Our security, our very existence, depends on the rule of international law,” he said.
“And that is why Singapore took a firm stand, condemning the attack and imposing sanctions on Russia.”
Previously, the IMF (International Monetary Fund) cut its forecast for global economic growth by almost one percentage point due to the Russo-Ukrainian war. War is believed to increase inflation.
Medium-term global growth is forecast to decline by around 3.3%, compared to an average of 4.1% in 2004 to 2013 and 6.1% in 2021.
The World Bank (World Bank) also predicts the same. 2022 growth cut by 3.2%.
