One person pedestrian Of Singapore tried and sentenced to three weeks in prison after his backpack knocked a motorcyclist and fell. As a result of the incident, the motorcyclist suffered broken bones and had to undergo surgery at the hospital.
As reported Channel News AsiaFriday (8/9/2023), the pedestrian named Hu Zhangwen (48) who is a Chinese citizen was sentenced to three weeks in prison after pleading guilty to one count of causing injury due to a rash act that endangered human life.
The incident occurred when Hu, who was running to catch the bus, dared to cross a three-lane road haphazardly, and continued running even though he saw a motorcyclist only 2-3 meters away from him.
It was revealed in court that Hu’s backpack hit the motorbike rider, causing the rider to fall from his vehicle and suffer three injuries broken bones. This incident occurred on February 28 2022, when Hu, who had just returned from work, ran to the bus stop point on Yishun Avenue 1.
The prosecutor stated in his complaint that Hu ‘deliberately violated traffic regulations by running across a double carriageway when he did not have the right of way’ and continued running even when a motorbike was moving very close to him.
According to the trial court, the motorbike rider, identified as a 54-year-old Malaysian man, honked his horn and swerved his motorbike to avoid Hu, but ended up hitting Hu’s backpack. The collision caused the rider to slip and fall from his motorbike.
The motorbike rider was rushed to hospital with broken bones in his arm, shoulder and wrist. He also had to undergo two operations and his arm had to wear an arm sling or arm brace.
The motorcyclist was treated in hospital for 12 days and received 74 days of inpatient leave.
