Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Saturday (2/12) that the number of infections Covid-19 increased significantly. The ministry also urges the public to continue taking vaccinations.

The estimated number of Covid-19 infections doubled to 22,094 on November 19-25, compared with 10,726 in the previous week.

“The average daily hospitalization and ICU cases due to COVID-19 remain stable,” the ministry added citing Channel News Asia.

The Health Ministry said the rise in infections may be due to factors such as the late-year travel season and waning immunity in the population.

EG.5 and its sub-lineage HK.3 remain the main subvariants in Singapore, accounting for more than 70 percent of sequenced cases.

“At this time, there is no indication that the main subvariant is more transmissible or causes more severe disease than other circulating variants,” said MOH.

Despite an increase in respiratory illnesses in a number of countries such as China and the Netherlands, the ministry claims the overall incidence of respiratory illnesses in Singapore has remained stable over the past month.

“There is no indication of an increase in severe respiratory disease, including in children,” he added.

China, which has seen a surge in “influenza-like illnesses” since mid-October, said the surge was caused by the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.

According to the Chinese government, the known circulation of pathogens is influenza and common bacterial infections that attack children, including mycoplasma pneumoniae.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Chinese authorities say they have not detected any new pathogens there.

Singapore’s Ministry of Health noted that to date, WHO stated that the increasing trend of respiratory diseases was not unexpected due to the onset of winter.

Covid-19 infection contributes to the total number of respiratory disease cases in Singapore.

The Ministry of Health advises the public to always follow developments in Covid vaccination.

Additionally they recommend an additional dose about one year after the last vaccine dose for those aged 60 years and over, medically vulnerable people, as well as residents of elderly care facilities.

“Beyond these groups, all individuals aged six months and over are also encouraged to receive additional doses, especially health care workers and household members/caregivers of medically vulnerable individuals,” the ministry added.

“The Ministry of Health continues to closely monitor the global and local situation. With the start of the peak overseas travel season, the Ministry of Health would like to remind all travelers to be vigilant and implement relevant travel precautions.”
