Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) announced the number of infections Covid-19 doubled on Saturday (2/12). What is the cause?

The estimated number of Covid-19 infections increased, namely to 22,094 on November 19-25 compared to 10,726 in the previous week.

Nevertheless, the ministry stated that the average daily hospitalization and ICU cases due to COVID-19 remained stable.

The ministry explained the increase in infections may be due to factors such as the late year travel season and reduced immunity of the population.

The EG.5 and its sub-lineage HK.3 remain the main subvariants in Singapore. Both account for more than 70 percent of cases sequenced.

“Currently, there is no indication that the main subvariant is more transmissible or causes more severe disease than other variants in circulation,” said Singapore’s Ministry of Health, quoted from Channel News Asia.

Although there has been an increase in respiratory diseases in a number of countries such as China and the Netherlands, the ministry said the overall incidence of respiratory diseases in Singapore has remained stable over the past month.

“There is no indication of an increase in severe respiratory illnesses, including in children,” the ministry said.

The Ministry noted that to date WHO stated that the increasing trend of respiratory diseases was not unexpected due to the onset of winter.

The Covid-19 infection contributes to the total number of respiratory disease cases in Singapore.

Furthermore, the Singapore Ministry of Health advises the public to always follow developments in Covid vaccination.

They also recommend an additional dose about one year after the last vaccine dose for those aged 60 and over, medically vulnerable people, as well as residents of elderly care facilities.

“Outside of this group, all individuals aged six months and over are also encouraged to receive additional doses, especially health care workers and household members/caregivers of medically vulnerable individuals,” the ministry explained.

“The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the global and local situation closely. With the start of the peak overseas travel season, the Ministry of Health would like to remind all travelers to be alert and implement relevant travel precautions,” he added.
