Leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi tewas dalam United States operation in Syria earlier this week. Government Singapore called the incident a “significant development for the ongoing global war against terrorism”.
Such was the statement delivered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore (MFA) today as reported by the Singapore media, Channel News Asia, Saturday (5/2/2022).
The MFA statement comes after United States President Joe Biden announced on Thursday (3/2) that ISIS leader was killed after detonating a bomb as US special forces stormed his hideout in Syria, in a “very challenging” nighttime helicopter strike.
“Terrorism and violent extremism remain a serious threat to countries around the world, including Singapore, “cover MFA.
“As a member of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS“Singapore remains a strong supporter of international counterterrorism efforts and ensures the lasting defeat of ISIS,” the MFA said.
Qurayshi, also known as Amir Mohammed Said Abd al-Rahman al-Mawla, took over the Islamic State group two years ago after its founder, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi also blew himself up in a US special forces raid in October 2019.
Qurayshi was dubbed the “Destroyer” and led the massacre of ethnic Yazidis before taking over.
