Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Minister of Law and Home Affairs SingaporeK. Shanmugam, asked residents to be careful listening to lectures from foreign preachers that have the potential to divide and spark conflict, including da’wah. Master Abdul Somad (UAS).
“Use your judgment, you know what keeps Singapore moving forward, you know what is good for you and the community,” Shanmugam told a press conference on Monday (23/5).
“Everyone is free to practice their religion here. Everyone is free to believe in God, or not to believe in God, or to believe whomever God they want to believe. But we don’t have to cross the line and attack other people,” he continued.
The statement was made by Shanmugam following the controversy over the refusal of UAS to enter Singapore some time ago. Since then, Singapore has been in the spotlight in Indonesia as UAS supporters competed to criticize and threaten the city-state to apologize.
Our position is very simple. This kind of person [UAS]we will not let him in,” said Shanmugam when asked if UAS had any plans of preaching when he wanted to visit Singapore some time ago.
Shanmugam also revealed that even though UAS visited Singapore for personal reasons, there was still the possibility that he would preach.
“It is our right to decide what is needed to maintain our security,” he said.
Shanmugam also emphasized the possibility that security forces could track down UAS supporters in Singapore.
“We, the Government, MHA, ISD (Department of Homeland Security), intervened when we sensed, arrested, that there was radicalization,” Shanmugam said.
“We will not allow people like Somad the opportunity to build a local following or engage in activities that threaten our security and communal harmony.”
