Singapore said on Friday that the high-speed rail project connecting Singapore and the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur has been terminated by mutual agreement.The Ministry of Transport of Singapore stated in a statement that Malaysia has allowed “to terminate this high-speed rail project and must compensate Singapore for the costs already incurred in fulfilling its obligations”.

The project was first proposed 10 years ago and was approved in 2013. After two extensions, December 31, 2020 is the deadline for construction. In June 2020, due to discussion of cost issues, the two Southeast Asian neighbors agreed to shelve this project that has been shelved many times.
The 350-kilometer high-speed railway was originally planned to be put into operation in 2026, which will reduce the travel time from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur to around 90 minutes, but now it takes more than 4 hours to drive.
Local Malaysian media reported in November last year that Malaysia is considering its southern city of Johor Bahru (Johor Bahru) as the end of the high-speed railway, rather than Singapore.
