Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Singapore finally allowed the use of China’s Sinovac vaccine. This was conveyed by the Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary in the Parliament session on Monday (2/8/2021).
Reported from Channel News Asia (CNA), Janil said people who had an allergic reaction after the first dose of the mRNA type vaccine could receive the second second dose of Sinovac vaccine.
In addition, said Janil, they will receive this second vaccine injection at a public hospital clinic for closer monitoring. This remembers the allergic reaction caused earlier.
Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, approved for use in national programs, use messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. It teaches cells to make proteins that trigger immune responses in the human body.
This type of vaccine is different from the Sinovac vaccine, which is known as CoronaVac. This vaccine uses unreactive coronavirus particles that have been killed to stimulate the body’s antibody protection.
During this time Sinovac vaccine is currently permitted to be administered in Singapore under a special access route. There has been no clear comment from Singapore whether this makes Sinovac part of its national vaccination or not.
While regarding regulatory approval for the Novavax vaccine, Janil said those who are allergic to the mRNA vaccine can also choose to wait for the Novavax vaccine. This vaccine has received permission from the Ministry of Health (MOH) and is planned to be delivered by the end of 2021.
The Ministry of Health and the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) are working with Novavax to facilitate regulatory submissions for their vaccine, Janil said. Singapore now has a total of 65,102 infections and 37 deaths, according to Worldometers data.
