Sindir BEM UI ‘Bribery’, Ade Armando Called for Defamation

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

A student from the Student Political Block, Delpedro Marhaen, stated that a communication lecturer at the University of Indonesia (UI) Ade Armando has committed slander and defamation through his statement on social media regarding the Chairman of the Student Executive Board (BEM), Leon Alvinda Putra, entering UI by way of bribing.

According to Delpedro, Ade’s statement on Twitter is a serious accusation and leads to a violation of Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions (UU ITE).

“But the funny thing is that Mas Ade made allegations that lead to a violation of the ITE Law, with Mas Ade saying that what should not be slander and defamation, obviously Mas Ade said that. But in reality, Mas Ade’s tweet that said Leon entered the UI was a bribe, right?,” said Delpedro in an open debate with the theme ‘Criticism of BEM UI Jokowi King Lip of Service’ which took place online, Monday (28/6) night.

“That’s one form of slander and serious defamation, UI institutions, the University of Indonesia, the state, are accused of being able to accept bribes, being able to accept bribes, being able to bribe, that’s a serious accusation,” he added.

Departing from that, he stated that the UI Rector’s move to summon Leon and a number of BEM UI administrators on Sunday (27/6) was wrong. According to him, the person who should have been called by the UI Rectorate was Ade, who had stated that entering UI could be through bribery.

“That’s why I said earlier that the UI Chancellor should have called BEM UI wrong, called Leon and his friends, the one who should have been called was Ade Armando. He has to clarify, explain what the accusations mean that UI can be bribed,” said Delpedro.

Ade, who was present in the open debate, responded by denying that he had stated that Leon entered UI by way of bribing.

Ade argued that his statement on Twitter was sarcastic. Ade then asked Delpedro to respect the language he used.

“First I never said Leon. Respect the language, yes, it’s sarcastic or cynical to say that smart children should enter UI, but how come these children are not smart. How can you enter UI?” he said.

“In my estimation, it should have been a normal exam, only smart kids would have passed into UI. So if there are stupid kids here, in the sense that I meant earlier, sarcastic, then I said that Maybe you don’t mean through official channels but through bribes,” said Ade.

Ade in his tweet uploaded a number of photos showing the actions of BEM UI which dubbed President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) as The King of Lip Service.

In the upload, Ade included an article asking whether students at BEM UI entered by means of bribes.

“This is the work of BEM UI. I really respect freedom of expression. But if you become an institution that represents UI students, don’t look too stupid. You used to go to UI, can you bribe?” Ade tweeted, Sunday (27/6).
