When you’re waiting for the keys to your new place and the ex you still live with opts for the fumigation method, you probably ask yourself: is he doing it on purpose?
Ingrid (40), mother of Olivier (9):
“My bedding stinks, my clothes smell like cigarette smoke, I have to wash my hair every day and my little man lies in his bed in a stench of tobacco. Unfortunately I can’t say anything about it. Or at least not too often.
It’s already super sweet that I can still live in the matrimonial home for free, even though we’re separated. Bert bought me out by cashing in the equity of the house and taking out mortgages. As a result, I was able to buy a new apartment. Only I won’t get the key for seven weeks.

The fumigation method
Six months ago we told our son Olivier that we are separating. That mom and dad still love each other a lot, but not enough to stay together. That’s not a lie. Even though I was the one who broke up with Bert and Bert could have gone on for years. Bert helped me with everything and until my apartment is finished, I sleep in the spare room.
But the delivery has been delayed and seems to take forever. Also because Bert started smoking almost immediately after our breakup. He knows I think that’s a dirty habit. He also smoked when we met, then quit for me. Now he thinks it’s his right to start again.
Sometimes I think he cares. To let me know it’s time for me to go
Officially, he only does it under the extractor hood in the kitchen. But as soon as I step out the door, he also puffs up in his – formerly our – living room. All those months I’ve been smoked out. Sometimes I think he cares. To let me know that it is now time for me to go. Well, I’m counting down the days.”
