Another 117 illegal migrants who illegally crossed the state border with Belarus were detained in Lithuania during the day, the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) said on Saturday.
The flow of illegal migrants across the Lithuanian-Belarusian border has reportedly increased sharply recently. Since the beginning of this year, the total number of detained illegal immigrants has reached 3,401 – 40 times more than in the whole of last year.
The majority of foreigners detained this year – 2,222 – are or pretend to be Iraqi citizens, 191 migrants from Congo, 129 from Cameroon, 90 from Russia, 89 from Syria, 85 from Iran, 79 from Guinea and Afghanistan, the others have come from other countries. Most illegal migrants want to enter Western European countries through Lithuania.
Migrants are currently accommodated in the structural units of the Border Guard Service, including the Aliens Registration Center in Pabradė, the dormitories of the Border Guard School in Medininkai and the border guard districts, as well as in municipal facilities in Alytus city and district, Lazdijai, Varena and other districts.
Lithuanian officials believe that the Belarussian regime is deliberately facilitating the flow of migrants across the border.
Due to the migration crisis, a state of emergency has been declared in Lithuania.
