The fallen Turkish presidential candidate Sinan Ogan has announced that he supports President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the second round of the presidential election. It will take place on Sunday, May 28. The nationalist Ogan came third in the first round of the Turkish presidential election.
Ogan received 5.2 percent of the vote in the first round. Erdogan received 49.5 percent of the vote. With that, he received more votes than opposition candidate Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, for whom 45 percent of voters voted. An absolute majority is required to win. A second round of voting was therefore necessary.
The main reason for his support is the fact that Erdogan has a majority in parliament, says Ogan. In addition, Kiliçdaroglu’s party could not convince him of a future perspective.
Victory party
Because the differences between the number of voters who voted for Erdogan and Kiliçdaroglu were relatively small, Ogan’s support may be decisive.
The fact that Ogan has expressed his support for Erdogan does not mean that voters who voted for Ogan in the first round will now automatically vote for Erdogan. Ogan was supported by the Victory Party. The leader of that party, Ümit Özdag, said that Ogan’s position is not the party’s position. He said he would make an announcement tomorrow morning.
