Simultaneous Regional Election 2020 Yellow Light Amid Corona Outbreak

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

A number of members epidemiology reminding the government of the various risks that overshadow the moment Simultaneous Regional Election 2020 still held even in the middle pandemic corona virus.

The various problems range from the potential spike in cases, the readiness of health facilities to the absence of local regulations regarding the response to Covid-19.

The government, DPR and the General Election Commission (KPU) previously agreed that the voting day would fall on December 9, 2020. This year’s regional elections will bring together 270 elections.

A total of 100,359,152 voters in 309 districts / cities will be involved in this election.

According to epidemiologist from Airlangga University (Unair), Laura Navila Yamnani, the potential crowd during voting in the next two weeks must be a special note for the government. Especially considering that after that there was also a long holiday.

According to him, positive cases of Covid-19 have the potential to increase and will be dangerous if the government is ignorant.

“It is dangerous that in December there will be two major events, Pilkada and a long holiday which may be longer than before because the cumulative changes to Eid,” said Laura to CNNIndonesia.com, Wednesday (25/11).

Laura said that the government must make a layered plan with scenarios to ensure that the handling of Covid-19 patients does not overwhelm health workers. One plan is to map the preparedness of all health care facilities.

“Moreover, the current situation turns out that some hospitals are full, queuing up at the emergency room. Then the isolation room is full. This must be confirmed and mapped. If the conditions are like that then these two events are very scary,” he said.

The scenario made, he continued, must also be massively socialized to the public.

“She is OK [rencana berlapis]. So, this society must also be given an understanding, “he added.

Meanwhile, epidemiologist from the University of Indonesia (UI) Tri Yunis Miko Wahyono emphasized that 3M’s rules of the game in the form of wearing masks, maintaining distance and washing hands are a must to prevent Covid-19 transmission.

According to him, the campaign and enforcement of sanctions for health protocol violators is a challenge in itself.

“If the Indonesian people are like this. The counseling should be carried out on a large scale, law enforcement should be carried out in all regions, not just Jakarta,” he said.

Even so, he emphasized that areas that do not hold Pilkada do not mean they can be more relaxed. Similar controls remain mandatory.

In addition, he considered that there was a lack of Regional Regulations (Perda) regarding the response to Covid-19 in a number of regions holding Pilkada. The Perda in question contains provisions, responsibilities, powers, and sanctions during the handling of Covid-19.

“In the regional elections there is no regional regulation, the crowd is allowed. There is no prohibition against crowding in the electoral district,” he added.

The graph of positive Covid-19 cases in Indonesia has not shown any signs of decreasing. In fact, the last few days of positive cases have always reached around 4,000 per day.

On Wednesday (25/11), data showed an additional 5,534 positive cases, so that the accumulation reached 511,836 cases of corona virus infection. This addition broke the daily record for the most number of 5,444 cases on November 13, 2020.

Five provinces occupy the top list of daily positive patient increments, including DKI Jakarta, East Java, West Java, Central Java and, South Sulawesi. Four of them, except for DKI Jakarta, are known to have participated in holding Pilkada.

In addition, so far more than 100 KPU and Bawaslu officers have been infected with the corona virus during the 2020 Pilkada Simultaneous stages.

The largest number is in Boyolali Regency, Central Java. Last August, 96 election supervisory officers in Boyolali District tested positive for Covid-19.

Covid-19 cases among election organizers also occurred in Agam and Bukittinggi, West Sumatra and Depok, West Java.
