Simrig SR3: The Ultimate 3DOF Motion System for Racing Simulators

June 2020… We installed a Simrig SR1 and started a journey that I never imagined would take me to where I am today, with a dedicated class racing room and a kit worth over €38,000. But much of what we use today got its start there, thanks to the durability of Swedish Gothenburg gang Simrig’s 3DOF motion system. “Can they be placed on top of another movement system to analogize the entire movement?” After weeks of measurements and discussions with the people behind SR products (which are handmade in Sweden), the answer is yes, and the rest, as we say, is history. The SR1 was superseded by the SR2, which was a clear step up in quality and detail in terms of analogue motorsport, and now it’s here again.

The main difference between the SR1, SR2 and the newly released SR3 is the strength of the engine. Simrig installed a 1000 watt Italian motor in the SR3, their most powerful motor ever, which allows them to move 250kg of the rig (plus drive) instead of the SR2’s 225kg (the SR1 can handle 175kg ). The stronger motor also means that, like the comparison with a front/rear combo with an integrated receiver, the SR3 feels more controlled than its smaller brother. If you felt that the SR1 and SR2 were a little too “soft” in the way they conveyed bumps and unevenness in the road, then the SR3 is the right choice as it feels firmer without being too stiff.
When it comes to this 3DOF motion analogy, there’s a lot of weird stuff going on if you ask me, as most big-name manufacturers either only offer motion systems that look like rumbling motors, without a long enough path of travel, or motion The legs hit so hard that you need a harness and mouthguard to use the gear in question. For example, one time I tested the Dbox D5 and it just vibrated overall (if I just wanted to vibrate, I’d buy a bass vibrator for 1% of the price of the Dbox). In 2022 I also tested Sigma Integral’s system and it hit so hard and produced such intense movement that my kidneys hurt, despite all the hard work we all simulate when pursuing this expensive hobby at this level Real life racing, but I’d like to be able to play for hours without having to take painkillers afterwards.

The new mounting system is smoother, simpler and more attractive than before, and the form factor itself is superior to Scorpion, Prosimu, Sigma, Dbox and Qubic systems.

In SR3, Simrig found a wonderful balance between systems that create empathy in a convincing and detailed way and lots of action without “punishing” me as the user with too hard a blow, basically Just analogy to the suspension at the bottom. Like the SR2, the SR3 operates with 7ms input lag and 100mm per second speed. They can move up and down by 7 cm, which makes them ideal for rally or rally racing. At Gamereactor we mainly play EA Sports WRC, Richard Burns Rally (using Next Gen Physics 7.12), and especially Dirt Rally 2.0, and in all three games the system performs very well. There’s no delay between what’s happening in the game and what the SR3 is doing, and with Simrig’s own software, it’s incredibly simple to set up exactly the amount of movement you want.
One of the innovations of the system is that Simrig moved away from the old mounting system, we installed two 20x20mm rails under the aluminum profile rig and mounted the SR2 on these rails. The SR3 comes with four aluminum brackets, which are basically just a horseshoe-shaped bracket that mounts to the waist of the system and mounts directly to the side of the profile drill. Sleek and super simple, it also looks better and neater than before. All four legs are still connected to an ECU box, which is the smallest and easiest to handle on the market. If you’ve never simulated racing with a 3DOF system like this, it might be hard to understand just how good the experience is. I often hear people who drive without a sport system say that sport is “just confusing and still doesn’t feel like real sport in a real car”, but nothing could be more wrong than that. In many cases, it’s pretty much the same thing, and for those thinking of buying here, we can only give the SR3 our best advice.
