Romanian Simona Halep, formerly ranked number one in the world, was suspended for four years from tennis due to a violation of doping rules, according to what was confirmed by the International Agency for the Integrity of the Game.
Halep, 31 years old, who won the French titles in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019, was convicted of two separate violations of the laws, the first related to a negative analytical result for the banned substance Roxadustat at the US Open in 2022, which was conducted through a regular urine test during the competition, and the second related to irregularities in her passport. Mathematical biology.
Its suspension period extends until October 2026, after it was temporarily suspended last October.
Halep announced that she would appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and the Romanian posted on social media: “I have never used any banned substance intentionally or intentionally. I intend to file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. I have refused to accept their decision to ban for four years.” .
The independent court, which heard evidence presented by Halep, met in London on June 28 and 29, to return and confirm that it had found that the Romanian had committed deliberate violations under Article II of the anti-doping program in tennis.
For her part, Halep claimed that experts discovered that she had mistakenly taken contaminated nutritional supplements, but the International Game Integrity Agency said in a statement that although the court accepted that Halep had taken a contaminated supplement, it “also decided that the volume that the player took was not “It could lead to a concentration of roxadustat present in the positive sample.”
Halep returned to the top ten in the world rankings for professional women’s players, before she was suspended, after falling out of the list of the top 20 players in 2020, after suffering repeated injuries.
In May, Halep attacked the decision to postpone her hearing three times, saying: “They are not only killing my reputation, they are also killing me as a professional player, and I’m not even talking about the consequences for my mental health. Delayed justice is not justice.”
Halep has not played any competitive match since her exit in the first round of the 2022 US Open about a year ago, then she ended her season in mid-September, after undergoing nasal surgery to solve a respiratory problem, before she was temporarily suspended.
Halep became the first prominent player to fall into the trap of anti-doping, since the resounding suspension of Russian Maria Sharapova in 2016, after she tested positive for meldonium. She was suspended for 15 months.
