Simon Kinberg Reflects on Lessons Learned from Dark Phoenix Saga in the X-Men Universe

Director/producer Simon Kinberg reflects on the lessons learned from his experience with the Dark Phoenix saga in the X-Men universe.

FOX’s X-Men film series seemed to have found its way again with First Class (2011) and Days of Future Past (2014). Simon Kinberg, the talented writer and producer behind the films, emerged as the main creative architect of Fox’s X-Men. But then they missed the mark with Apocalypse (2016) and it all ended with Dark Phoenix which was an absolute disaster.

Since then, Simon Kinberg has continued his career on other projects, while the X-Men have returned to the orbit of Marvel Studios and Disney. In a conversation with JoBlo Speaking about his role as an executive producer on the Apple TV+ series Invasion, Kinberg took a moment to reflect on his experience with Dark Phoenix and the perennial question: Is it possible to adapt this X-Men saga?

Cinema or television?

“The idea of making Dark Phoenix as a series is fascinating because what I felt building up to the movie, and even initially when I wrote it, was that more than one movie was needed to tell that story.”

“I think to do it in a way that is really loyal to the X-Men comic is to make it intergalactic and really get into the Hellfire Club. There are so many different aspects of the story, right? They have to remove a lot when you’re counting a two-hour version. But, the idea of doing a four hour one, whether it was two movies or doing an eight hour or 10 hour limited series, would really allow you to get in all the different elements of the original comic and the original run.” Simon Kinberg concluded.

Dark Phoenix

No doubt the history of the comics is very interesting, but it should be possible to make a good 2 hour movie with all this material, although the idea of the series is also very interesting.

What will happen in the future?

For now, we don’t know Marvel Studios’ plans with the X-Men. Since only Deadpool 3 (2024) is underway and we will surely see different versions of the mutants that have gone through the movies like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. But one of the big rumors on the internet ensures that they will do a reboot after Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). So it is not ruled out that later they make a new adaptation of Dark Phoenix in the UCM.

All the X-Men movies are available on Disney Plus with this link.
