Simón clarifies if there will be a new covid outbreak in summer

Fernando Simón, director of Ccaes.

The secondary role to which the Covid-19 in the day to day of Spanish society should not be a reason for relaxation when it comes to preventing infections, warns Fernando Simonwho is blunt about it: “The virus is still there, hasn’t completely disappeared”, asserts the director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (Ccaes), who predicts that, despite the high vaccination rates, the indications suggest that “in summer the contagions will skyrocket” as a result of the spread of Omicron and his bloodlines. However, the epidemiologist calls for calm: “The consequences will be milder.”

During his speech at the event for the 50th anniversary of Medicusmundi Norte at the College of Physicians of Asturias, Simón stressed that the population “has been vaccinated to be able to live normally”. “And although infections will skyrocket in summer,” the epidemiologist stressed, its impact will be less than that of previous outbreaks.

The director of the Ccaes appealed to this minor effect of the virus on health to rule out the adoption of new measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus. In this regard, he argued that enacting new restrictions during the summer would mean a “wreck” for the economy, although he did advocate maintaining the current ones, such as the mandatory use of the mask on public transport or health centers. Measures that, he predicted, “will accompany us for a long time.”

Regarding the possibility of administering a fourth dose of the covid vaccine, Simón stressed the need to act “calmly” to adopt “the decision that is most convenient”. “We entered a few months in which the respiratory diseases they have less presence, time plays in our favor”, he asserted.

How many people have been vaccinated against covid in Spain?

During his speech, Simón claimed the positive evolution of the vaccination campaign against covid in Spain, where more than half of the population has already received the booster dose. Specifically, the 53 percentaccording to data provided by the Ministry of Health last Friday.

A total of 39,080,572 people have already received the complete agenda, 7,193 more than last week. This represents 92.6 percent of those over 12 years of age. On the other hand, a total of 39,232,214 people have received at least one dose, 93 percent, 3,104 more than the previous Friday.

The truth is that the coronavirus transmission in Spain it remains low. According to the last part published by the Ministry of Health, the incidence of covid in people over 60 years of age has fallen by 45 points and now stands at 617.92 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
However, up to 6,481 people remain hospitalized as a result of the virus throughout Spain, and 325 are in the ICU. The occupancy rate of beds occupied by coronavirus stands at 5.25 percent and in ICUs at 3.65 percent
