Simitli: Sofia Pride extends an invitation to Boyko Borisov – 2024-08-21 19:40:33

/ world today news/ The organizing committee of Sofia Pride has sent an official letter-invitation to a meeting with the Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, at which the possibilities of cooperation with the executive power on the repeatedly outlined problems of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people will be discussed people (LGBTI) in public life.

The reason for the letter is Boyko Borisov’s statements in a television program that “one should not show off so much” nor that LGBTI people are the object of persecution in Bulgaria.

The letter states that attempts at productive and sustained dialogue and cooperation with parliamentaryly represented political parties from almost the entire political spectrum, as well as with individual ministers over the years, have remained fruitless. The problems of the LGBTI community are manifested both in most spheres of public life – such as education, health care and the labor market – and in those aspects of personal life where the legislative regulation of relations is inevitable, stated Sofia Pride.

The necessary changes in state policy towards LGBTI minorities are within the competence of the legislative and executive powers. The main and short-term goal of Sofia Pride is not just the equal treatment of LGBTI people, but also their acceptance by society.

Sofia Pride insists on:

• Introduction into the Penal Code of qualified compositions for crimes committed for homophobic or transphobic motives.

• Clear and categorical condemnation of hate speech, including that based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

• Integration of up-to-date and scientific information concerning LGBTI people into the curricula of general education subjects in the school education system.

• Introducing effective mechanisms to deal with school bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

• Effective access to adequate health services that serve the specific needs of LGBTI people and are provided in an identity-accepting professional environment.

• Legalization and equality of all families, regardless of gender, gender self-determination and orientation of partners.

• Introduction of an accessible and free administrative procedure for changing civil gender by civil status authorities.

Sofia Pride 2017 was the tenth edition of the annual march for equality and was held on June 10 under the title “Let’s banish prejudice”. More than 3,000 people took part in it, making it the largest in the ten-year history of the event so far.
