KOMPAS.com – theory planetesimal and tidal theory is one of the two theories of the formation of the universe that have similarities. Tidal theory basically departing from theory planetesimal, do not be surprised if the two have in common.
The planetesimal theory and the tidal theory appear to be the same theory. However, the two have differences. Following are the similarities and differences between planetesimal theory and tidal theory.
The solar system starts from the sun
The first similarity between the planetesimal theory and the tidal theory is that the solar system both started from the sun. The planetesimal theory and the tidal theory agree that 4.6 billion years ago the sun was a massive star that existed before the solar system formed.

The solar system originated from the gravitational force of a large star that crossed the sun
The planetesimal theory and the tidal theory also have something in common, namely that the solar system began when a massive star moved past the sun. Where the star’s gravitational force attracts solar gas.
The attracted gas is retained by the sun and slowly turns into the earth, planets, and other objects that populate our solar system. So, both theories assume that the solar system started from the sun and was formed from a small part of the sun’s matter.
Stars that cross the sun are massive
According to the planetesimal theory and the tidal theory, stars that pass through the sun are massive or large. However, the planetesimal theory does not explain how big the star is.
While according to Harols Jefferies in The Earth, Its Origin, History and Physical Constitution (1924), in the tidal theory, a passing star must be more massive or larger than the sun so that it can create tides on the sun’s surface.

Difference between planetesimal theory and tidal theory
There is no planetesimal
In the planetesimal theory, the mass attracted from the sun directly becomes space material called planetesimal.
Reporting from Universe Today, planetesimals are small celestial bodies formed from a collection of dust, rock, and other matter. These planetesimals then form the planets in the planetesimal theory.
While the theory of tides, the mass attracted from the sun to form unstable tidal waves. The tidal wave of gas then breaks up into gas filaments.

Gas filaments and do not form planetesimals. Reported from NASA Scientific Visualization Studio, the clumps of gas filaments then continue to spin and suck up the surrounding material. These gas filaments then form the earth and other planets in the solar system.
