Walter Isaacson recently published a biography Elon Musk. In the past, he also wrote a biography of the late founder of Apple, Steve Jobs. He also revealed the characteristics of the two which turned out to have many similarities.
Isaacson followed Elon Musk for 2 years to write his biography. He also interviewed Steve Jobs 40 times. In Mus’ biography, Isaacson often compares him to Steve Jobs. Following are their similarities according to Isaacson, quoted detikINET from Insider.
Has a dark side
Isaacson said Musk has a dark side, which he calls devil mode, where he lacks empathy and asks his employees for unrealistic deadlines. This is similar to the nature of Steve Jobs.
Even their words when criticizing employees are similar, more or less, for example ‘that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard’.
“That brutal honesty can be debilitating, even offensive. But it’s also effective at times, in creating what Jobs called A employees,” Isaacson said. According to him, both of them lacked empathy and were more focused on completing a bigger mission.
Difficult boss
Both Steve Jobs and Elon Musk were nightmares as bosses. “Like Steve Jobs, Musk doesn’t care whether he attacks or intimidates the people he works with, as long as he can push them to accomplish something they thought was impossible,” said Isaacson.
Steve Jobs and Elon Musk act as ‘alpha males’ who control the company down to the smallest details. They even marginalized their colleagues.
Steve Wozniak, who founded Apple with Jobs, plays an important role in the company’s history, but is sometimes not considered. A similar incident happened to Musk, where he seemed to get rid of Tesla founder Martin Ebehard.
