President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) asked the local government to make branding in accordance with the potential of each area. He said that regional branding is currently similar.
This was conveyed by Jokowi in his remarks at the 2023 National Coordination Meeting of Regional Heads and Forkopimda at the Sentul International Convention Center (SICC), Bogor Regency, West Java, Tuesday (17/1/2023).
“I need to remind you that we have 514 districts and cities and now the provinces have also been added, so there are a total of 38 provinces. Be careful with the city planning,” said Jokowi.
He said the local government must design its territory well. According to him, each region must show its own advantages, not even be similar.
“All districts and cities must start designing their cities well. So that each city and district has differentiation. Maximize the potential of the existing regions, create a master plan that really has a vision for the future. Don’t all of our district cities be the same,” he said.
Jokowi asked regional heads to create their own regional brands. Jokowi judged that regional brands in Indonesia were similar.
“The name has a brand that is almost similar. There is ‘faith’, there is ‘Berseri’, ‘ber’ ‘ber’ ‘ber’ all. Make a city brand according to the potential and advantages of each of us,” he said.
“It could be a city of bananas, why not. It could be a city of fish, why not. It could be a city of music, why not. It could be a city of furniture, why not. But it’s consistent. If it’s already a city of bananas, it means planting more bananas in that city,” he continued .
He said the regional government must prepare industries that match the regional potential. Jokowi also gave an example of Davao City branding in the Philippines.
“Then prepare the industry for post-harvest bananas. Prepare it in the city. So that the city’s brand will be visible,” he said.
“Let’s look at Davao, the Philippines, the city of bananas, everywhere there are only bananas, the industry is bananas, banana dances, all of them are bananas. So if people think of Davao, it’s bananas,” Jokowi continued.
