Juraj Simek is like that. His contract expires at the end of April. The striker last played for the SCRJ Lakers, to whom he had been loaned by Servette. It was supposed to be a fresh start, the former international wanted to boost his career at Obersee again. Instead, the 32-year-old now faces an uncertain hockey future.
“The situation is not easy,” Simek admits, “and will not improve in the next few months.” Maybe he would have a better feeling with a signed contract in his pocket. «But I honestly don’t think the next season will be normal. The losses for the clubs remain, but the effects for the players are not yet foreseeable. »

The Swiss-Slovak dual citizen deals surprisingly with the uncertainty. For one reason: Simek already went through a sporting low in 2015 and was without a contract for half a year. After four seasons with Servette, he strived for an air change, landed for 15 games in Finland, for 12 games in Lugano, was bullied away again from southern Ticino – and came to Geneva again. “Back then it was extremely stressful for me.” His wife was expecting her first child, and the son is now four years old. The family lives near Einsiedeln SZ, and will stay there for the time being, even though they feel at home in Geneva.

Help from the RAV
Simek does not want to allow the thought that this coronavirus crisis could mean the end of his career. «I’m not wondering if I have this concern. I’m just lucky that we’re not going through anything worse now. » The striker wants to continue playing hockey. But he has no other choice but to register as unemployed until he can do it again.

«Five years ago, I did not receive unemployment benefits for six months without a contract. But this time I have to bridge the time like this, “says Simek,” after all, we professional athletes also pay into the unemployment fund as normal. ” At the same time, the father of the family is concerned about what his professional future could look like next to the ice cream and is not reluctant to seek the help of the RAV.
