Judo in Paris 2024: Prisca Awiti’s path to her historic medal
Awiti’s road to her xxx medal began with a resounding victory in the first round, when she defeated by ippon Nigara Shaheenfrom the Refugee Olympic Team.
The time for the round of 16 arrived and facing her was the world runner-up at the 2024 Abu Dhabi World Championships, the Polish Angelika SzymanskaHowever, the Mexican pulled off a surprise and won 1-0 thanks to a Waza-Ari.
In the quarterfinals, the rival was the Austrian Ljubljana Piovesanawinner of two 2024 World Tour series and who, like Awiti, is of British origin. Once again, the Mexican won 1-0 thanks to another Waza-Ari.
Until the semi-finals came and the colour of the medal that the Mexican would win began to be defined. The rival in that instance was the young Croatian Katarina Kristowho only competed in his first Senior World Championship in 2023 and whose greatest achievements were two victories in two World Tour Grand Prix.
The result of those semi-finals was a victory for the Mexican thanks to an Ippon by arm lock.
And so, only Leski, the two-time world runner-up, remained.
