Silje Nordnes – That’s why she protects her privacy

TØYEN (Dagbladet): Last year came the news that the well-known “P3morgen” trio – consisting of Silje Nordnes (35), Markus Neby (29) and Ronny Brede Aase (34) -should thank you, after being on the ear of all of Norway’s population for ten years.

The trio remained in NRK, but went their separate ways. Nordnes remained for a while in the “P3” scenery, and had not thought much about what she wanted to do next. The 35-year-old felt that she had “peaka” in her career, and considered “P3morgen” as her dream job. She struggled to figure out what to do, became frustrated on her own behalf and impatient with herself.

When Dagbladet meets Nordnes on a cold November morning on Tøyen Torg in Oslo, life is considerably different.

Now she is highly relevant as program manager for the NRK primetime initiative “Maskorama”, something she herself describes as “the biggest program she will ever lead”.

Skeptical of attention

The TV program, which involves celebrities dressing up in spectacular masks and costumes, and performing a musical number of great entertainment value on stage, will entice viewers in prime time on Saturday nights ahead.

When we talk about the premiere approaching by leaps and bounds, it is a very eager Nordnes who talks about his expectations. She has ambitions to be a steady hand for the participants, at the same time as she admits that she is excited about the reception.

The transition from radio (which she describes as her first love) to live television is relatively new. She points out that if, against all odds, she were to shit herself out, it would not only affect her, but an entire production.

– You also become much more exposed, as an individual. With radio, I sometimes feel that you are just friends with the listeners, but this is different, she says, with a fresh cup of coffee in hand.

Nordnes makes no secret of the fact that she is unsure of how to deal with the attention that accompanies the TV program.

– I’m a little excited about it, but the most important thing for me is that I do the best I can, work hard and do my part of the program. Of course, I may be nervous about reviews and receptions, but it’s something I just have to try and not be so preoccupied with. Then I think you get the yeast, she points out.

Need to set boundaries

It is often the case that when you are part of the limelight, it follows that others should think something about you. Speculation can arise, and feedback can be mixed.

– How do you handle it?

– My philosophy is that I try to be true to myself, and to stand steady. As long as it is in care, I experience that you can withstand the external pressure better. As soon as you start to “fake”, be someone else or play a role, I think you are on an insecure ground. So my strategy is to be real, myself and think that this is what I have to offer. Then people like it or not. I can not do anything about it, she states.

Over the years, Nordnes has at times talked openly about several topics such as his orientation, but she has nevertheless consciously protected her privacy well.

When asked why it is so important to her, she is clear in her case:

– I may have felt a greater need to set boundaries around myself, a little clearer. When I sat on the radio every morning, you could control it more yourself, and then there was not one headline or one case. Then one could show all the nuances of oneself and life. Now there will be more small drops, and it will not be the best reflection of reality.

– With “P3morgen” it was very much about us, and it did for ten years. “Maskorama” is about costumes and guessing games. Not so much about what I do in private, and then I think it’s okay to keep that distinction, she adds.

Laid on ice

Before she hijacked the program manager job, the plan was to have a study stay in New York. Nordnes wanted to get inspiration, a new perspective and learn something new. These plans were put on hold as a result of the pandemic.

For Nordnes, the pandemic has slipped into what she describes as powerlessness. Freedom is restricted, you can not plan anything, it is not possible to look ahead, and you simply have to sit back and follow the flow. She finds this frustrating.

In the middle of it all, she experienced that her grandmother became ill.

– Then you suddenly get very close to life. You are not allowed to visit, and you are afraid that you will not see her again. Fortunately it went well now, but I also have people in the family who are laid off, and it is very heavy. I look at my surroundings around me, and am worried about how this will go, she admits.

A bright spot during the pandemic was the podcast “Cozy”, where the idea was to try to set aside two hours a week to think positively.

– It has actually been very good, and for me who has worked with entertainment and not hard news, I think that my function or my role has been to try and make people smile a little. We may need it from time to time.

What is on the agenda after “Maskorama” is currently unknown, but Nordnes can, however, reveal that she is working on a podcast that will come in the spring.
