Silicon Box to Invest 3.2 Billion Euros in New Production Plant in Northern Italy, Creating 1,600 Jobs and Helping Alleviate Global Chip Shortage

Business and Made in Italy Ministry Adolfo Urso said on Monday that the Silicon Box company will invest 3.2 billion euros to open a new production plant in northern Italy that is expected to employ 1,600 workers. Silicon Box is a Singapore-based startup that specializes in a particularly small, cutting-edge type of integrated circuit called “chiplet,” which is designed to be assembled with other chiplets to create large processors that work very quickly. What he wants to build in northern Italy – where exactly is not yet known – would be his first plant abroad, outside of Singapore.

Semiconductors are the materials underlying the construction of microchips and are therefore fundamental components in many products, not just electronics. But for over two years, partly due to the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic and partly due to the global trade crisis, there has been a serious shortage around the world. European countries have found themselves in particular difficulty, because they are almost completely dependent on foreign countries for the supply of chips: for this reason, last April the European institutions reached an agreement to invest 43 billion euros in the production of microchips in the European Union . The construction of the new Silicon Box plant in Italy is therefore part of this broader strategy.
