{ SILICON – 20 ANS } – Chrono IT 2019-2020 : Arm et la 5G

What are your techno (Proust) madeleines? On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, Silicon is sharing itss with you. Today: the years 2019-2020.

Arm: all-terrain architecture

Ultra-dominant on mobile, the Arm architecture is gaining ground on computers. Apple has started adopting it for its Macs, at Intel’s expense. Microsoft (re) tries to adapt Windows to it. Chromebooks are also a showcase. Its visibility is increasing in parallel among the tenors of the public cloud, with the argument of the performance per watt ratio, supported by a reduced set of instructions. Its establishment in the data center as in the periphery should accelerate under the wing of NVIDIA, which has spent $ 40 billion to take control of its designer.
But we will monitor, even more after this acquisition, the rise of open architectures.
At the top of the list, RISC-V, which stems from the same project, started in the 1980s in Berkeley and initially materialized by the British company Acorn Computers. The foundation that carries it today counts NVIDIA among its members. Huawei, Qualcomm and Samsung are also among them.

5G: starting on a gentle slope

In full confinement and while the debate on the supposed risks of 5G is still alive, the three operators – Orange, SFR and Bouygues Télécom – are launching the first salvo of their offer. Packages, with aligned prices, which will be able to operate in the large French metropolises according to the activation of the antennas… and the equipment of the French in compatible smartphones.
Because while there are promising prospects for industrial applications, the contributions of 5G for individuals have not really convinced.
After having invested nearly 2.8 billion to seize the frequencies, the operators will have to refine their strategy to create a market which should not have reality before the end of 2021, or even beyond. –
