Silent journey in Southeast against senseless violence: “Enough is enough”

A quiet afternoon in Southeast against senseless violence. The immediate reason is the death of 35-year-old former football player Jergé Hoefdraad, who was shot dead at the beginning of last month after trying to appease an argument.

The march is being run under the name Waka#SayTheirNames. Waka is Surinamese for walking or marching. Among the approximately one hundred participants, many relatives of victims of violence. Mayor Femke Halsema is also joining us.

“You see an awful lot of pain,” says a father of two young children. “Not only with the immediate relatives, but also with everyone around them. You hope that the violence is a vicious circle that you can break one day.”

A woman who walks along has a son who has become a victim of senseless violence. Fortunately, the boy ended well, but the perpetrators were never caught. The violent incident took place years ago, but little has changed since then, according to the mother. “We must continue to protest against it. Enough is enough.”

“I think you should always keep giving a signal,” says another participant. “And if it works…we’ll see. I don’t know.”
