A spokesperson for the party confirms this after reporting in Trouw. Kaag is under serious threat and heavily secured, which is a hard blow for her family. “I don’t want to go through this again with my family,” she tells the newspaper.
Made a decision
After the fall of the Rutte IV cabinet, Kaag already announced that she had made a decision about her political future. She did not want to release anything about that on Tuesday, as can be seen in this video:
Kaag says in Trouw that the party gave her all the space to continue as party leader. “They fully supported me if I wanted to continue and have only encouraged it.”
Her position itself was also not the problem, says Kaag. “I still find the work exciting and challenging to do. It has been a special and beautiful experience since my return to the Netherlands.”
Pass baton
With elections approaching due to the fall of the cabinet, she says it is ‘good to pass the baton’.
“It is no secret where my dilemma lies: that is with my family,” says Kaag. My work has taken a toll on my children and my husband. When I look back… in 2017 I came to the Netherlands because I really thought: I can mean something here and try to do the right thing. But it has asked too much of them. I don’t think I should ask this again from my family.”
At the end of May, Kaag became emotional when her daughters expressed fear that something would happen to her in the College Tour program.
‘Only have to go wrong once’
One of the daughters said in the program: “We thought the Netherlands was a tolerant country. Now my mother can no longer go out on the streets because of the threats. The country does not deserve her and we hope she will look for another job. We are concerned that my mother will end up just like Els Borst . It only has to go wrong once.”
