Did you know that signs of kidney problems can be seen from the skin? These are signs of ‘damaged’ acne that can be seen on your skin.
The kidneys are vital organs that play an important role in filtering blood, removing toxins, and regulating fluid and electrolyte balance in the body. When the kidneys are damaged, their function is interrupted and they can cause various health problems.
One symptom that can be seen externally is changes in the skin. You may be experiencing dry skin, rashes, and even dull nail color.
This could be a sign of a problem with your kidneys. Referring from Society of the American Academy of DermatologyHere are the signs of kidney damage that can be seen on your skin.
Signs of kidney problems can be seen from the condition of the skin
1. Very dry and itchy skin
Healthy kidneys help keep skin hydrated. When the kidneys are damaged they can no longer properly filter and remove waste from the body. This can cause dry skin and scaling.
Very dry skin often occurs in people suffering from end-stage kidney disease, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant.
2. Itchy skin
Very itchy skin is a common symptom of advanced kidney disease. Itching can be bothersome and disrupt your life. Your skin may itch all the time if your kidneys are damaged.
Scarring and other signs of scarring can be signs of kidney problems. If you burn often, this will affect your skin and kidney health.
3. Changes in skin color
The kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO) which helps the body to make red blood cells. When the kidneys are damaged they can no longer produce enough EPO, which can cause anaemia.
Anemia can cause pale skin, fatigue, and shortness of breath. When the kidneys stop working properly, toxins build up in your body. This accumulation causes skin discoloration. You may see one of the following:
- Unhealthy pale color
- Gray color
- Yellow color
- The skin is yellow and thick with bumps and deep lines
4. Swelling around the eyes and feet
Kidneys help regulate fluid balance in the body. When the kidneys are damaged they cannot remove excess fluid properly. This causes swelling around the eyes, ankles, and feet.
5. Bruised skin
Kidneys help regulate blood clotting. When the kidneys are damaged they can no longer produce blood clotting proteins. This then causes easy bruising and excessive bleeding.
6. Dark lines on the skin
A build-up of toxins in the blood can cause dark lines on the skin, especially around the face and neck. These streaks are called acanthosis nigricans.
7. Itchy and crusty skin
Chronic kidney disease can cause dry, itchy and crusty skin, especially on the lower legs. This condition is called uremic pruritus.
8. Rashes or red spots appear
Some people with chronic kidney disease may experience a rash or red spots on their skin. This rash can be itchy and uncomfortable.
9. Inflammation
Your kidneys remove excess fluid and salt from the body. When they can no longer do this, fluids and salt accumulate in the body. This buildup causes swelling in the feet, hands or ankles.
10. Wounds that do not heal
Chronic kidney disease can make it difficult for your wounds to heal. This is because damaged kidneys can no longer remove toxins from the body which hinders the healing process.
11. Brittle and broken nails
Chronic kidney disease can cause nails to become brittle and break easily. This is because damaged kidneys can no longer provide enough nutrients to the nails.
Kidney disease can affect the appearance of your fingers, toes, or both. People suffering from advanced kidney disease may experience:
- White on top of one or more nails and normal to reddish brown on the base.
- White nails.
- Transverse white band on one or more nails (Muehrcke’s nails).
12. Hair loss
Chronic kidney disease can cause hair loss. This is because damaged kidneys can no longer provide enough nutrients to the hair.
It is important to remember that not everyone with kidney disease will experience all of these symptoms. If you experience any of these signs, it is important to see a doctor immediately for an examination.
