Signs of Economic Recovery in Region, Sparkasse Reports Strong Financing Commitments for 2023

An economic downturn was still expected in the fall due to the many geopolitical and economic upheavals. This has not happened so far. “There are currently signs of a slight recovery in the region’s economy, although uncertainties remain,” said Krumme in the announcement for the 2023 financial year.

With over 1.4 billion euros in new financing commitments, the lending business was once again lively (previous year: 1.9). The classic investments by medium-sized customers, who account for around two thirds of new business, were influential. Activities for the transformation of the economy and energy supply were also noticeable, particularly in the area of renewable energies. “We have allocated around 84 million euros for this,” reports board member Jürgen Büngeler. This is more than double the level of previous years.

Financing for new buildings and real estate has fallen sharply. At 581 million euros, the volume was around 44 percent below the previous year’s level.

Deposits rose by 4.4 percent to 8.2 billion euros, securities deposits by almost 20 percent to three billion euros. Mathematically, the customer portfolios achieved price gains of 176 million euros.

The merger of the Sparkassen Westmünsterland and Haltern am See is proceeding as planned and smoothly, said Krumme. The data pools will be merged between April 19th and 21st.

Sparkasse Westmünsterland has invested in its locations. Next Sunday (March 17th) the opening of the new Rosendahl advice center will be celebrated. Since the beginning of 2023, the Sparkasse has built six new, separate self-service branches that are specially protected against explosions, including in Capelle, Merfeld and Hausdülmen. “With these and other measures, such as paint in all ATMs, we were able to stop the explosions,” says board member Norbert Hypki.

“There is also a Sparkasse location that can be reached from anywhere: our direct branch,” says Hypki. Here, 29 customer advisors offer the same personal services via video and telephone as in the advice centers. “We now look after over 42,000 customers,” explains Sandra Fingerhut, head of one of two direct branch teams.
