Signs and Symptoms of RRD, Tear and detachment of the retina of the eye

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Tear it off retina not only experienced by the elderly. Young people who have myopia or nearsightedness can also experience medical emergencies that can cause blindness. The following are the signs and symptoms of a detached retina.

Although it can be cured, if the treatment is delayed, the disease which later became known as rhegmatogenous retinal detachment or RRD can be quite dangerous.

“It’s important to know the symptoms and to always be aware of this RRD, especially if you have a risk such as myopia,” said a vitreoretinal subspecialist ophthalmologist who also serves as Head of Retina Service at Jakarta Eye Hospitals & Clinic, Elvioza in a webinar organized by JEC, Friday (11/11). /3).

Elvioza said there are two main symptoms or signs of retinal detachment that patients can feel before the retina is completely torn or detached. Here are two symptoms that must be known so that it can be treated immediately medically.

1. Often feel like seeing flashes like lightning

When the retina begins to damage, the patient often sees flashes in his vision. Even if the atmosphere is dark or bright, the flashes will be seen more often and be a sign of a detached retina.

“This is a sign that the retina has started to tear, you should immediately do an examination, don’t let it go because these symptoms can get worse,” he said.

2. See small spots flying in large numbers

In addition to flashes of light, the patient may also see small, flying spots in large numbers. This is highly correlated with progressively larger retinal tears.

“If you want to be safe, no matter how small the complaint, you should immediately carry out an examination,” he said.

Who is at risk for RRD?

RRD disease or retinal detachment does not look at age. Old, young, teenagers, even children can experience this disease. After knowing the signs of retinal detachment, here are the people who are at risk of developing RRD.

1. Elderly

With age, various diseases can indeed be experienced by humans. Including vision problems and RRD. The reason is because of the ability to see and nearsightedness which is usually experienced by the elderly.

2. Myopia or myopia

Anyone who has myopia is at risk for developing RRD. Especially if you don’t routinely do a retinal examination plus a minus number which is relatively high.

“This includes congenital myopia sufferers or since birth,” he said.

3. Hereditary factors

If there is a family history of having RRD, your risk of developing this disease is also greater.

4. People with diabetes and hypertension

It is no secret that hypertension and diabetes can also affect the eyes. If you suffer from these two diseases, immediately consult a doctor and routinely perform examinations and monitor for signs of retinal detachment.
