The Dutch soldier, shot in the chest Sunday afternoon in Iraq and seriously wounded, was shot by a colleague. Right up until now it was only recognised that the soldier was injured during the routine maintenance of the weapons.
The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee declared today that an additional soldier is involved in the incident. An agency investigation team will look into the shooting incident. “They depart as soon as possible. It is doable that they will arrive by plane on Tuesday morning,” states a spokesperson.
It is unclear how lengthy the investigation will just take. On top of that, it is not yet acknowledged how the soldier who was transferred to a military services hospital in Baghdad on Sunday in significant situation.
The Ministry of Protection makes no additional statements on the identification of the sufferer and the other military included. The wounded soldier belongs to the 11th Air Brigade, a fast deployable light device. The other soldier is section of the Dutch unit securing the Erbil airport.
About 120 Dutch soldiers are active in the region all around Erbil.
