In the run-up to Sinterklaas, consumers bought considerably more from online stores than last year. The Dutch Payments Association estimates this on the basis of payment data from the past week. Online stores generated a fifth more turnover in the past seven days than in the same period a year ago.
Compared to a regular week this year, the web shops also performed much better in the week before Sinterklaas. There were 15 percent more transactions and turnover was also a fifth higher than in a normal week this year. The Payments Association looked at PIN figures from transaction processor Wordline and from iDeal owner Currence.
The busiest day in online stores after the other bargain fest, Cyber Monday, was last Wednesday.

The physical stores were also busy in the days before Sinterklaas and the total debit card turnover was comparable to last year. From Tuesday to Saturday, more than 98 million debit card payments were made, good for a turnover of 2.5 billion euros. The numbers were largely comparable last year.
Yesterday was the busiest time for debit card payments. At 12 noon, pins were made 760 times per second. Last year the busiest moment was on the Saturday before Sinterklaas, on November 27. Then at 3 p.m., there were 750 pins per second.
