Significantly more money for geriatric nurses

BerlinEmployees in geriatric care should receive significantly more wages than before in the next few years. According to information on Monday, the Verdi union reached an agreement with the Federal Association of Employers in the Care Industry (BVAP) on the final details of a collective agreement for the industry. Accordingly, wage increases of 25 percent compared to the current minimum wage for care workers were negotiated by mid-2023.

The main features of the collective agreement were already tied down in September last year. After that, however, further work was necessary in order to meet the requirements of the Posted Workers Act. The background to this is that the Federal Ministry of Labor is to declare the collective agreement generally binding for the entire industry. According to Verdi, this should take place on August 1st.

It is now planned that the minimum hourly wages for all employees in geriatric care will increase in four steps – for the first time on August 1, 2021 and for the last time on June 1, 2023. At the end of the wage increases, nursing assistants would therefore receive at least EUR 14.40 per hour. If you have completed at least one year of training, it should be 15.25 euros. The minimum hourly wages for registered nurses will increase to 18.75 euros.

“This corresponds to an increase of 25 percent compared to the previous minimum wage for nursing homes,” explained Verdi. In June 2023 at least the following monthly salaries would be paid for a 39-hour week: 2440 euros for nursing assistants – 2585 euros for those with at least one year of training – and 3180 euros for skilled nurses.

“The collective agreement regulates minimum conditions in care for the elderly,” emphasized Verdi. “Better regulations remain unaffected and are still possible.”
