Since June, hundreds of blood donors have been missing in the districts of Lüneburg and Lüchow-Dannenberg. (Topic image)

The German Red Cross is warning of a critical level of blood donations in north-east Lower Saxony. The number of donors has dropped significantly in the summer months. In the Lüneburg district, almost 1,400 people have donated blood in July and August. However, to meet demand, 1,600 would have had to be donated. According to the German Red Cross, the Lüchow-Dannenberg district is also currently lacking more than 200 blood donors. Since June, the willingness to donate has been declining – more significantly than ever. The reason for this could be the summer weather and the holiday season, according to a spokesperson. However, the clinics in the region are not yet sounding the alarm: they still have enough blood in stock.
