The number of applications for such repayment plans has increased by more than 85 percent in the past ten years. The number of applications increased from 12,928 in 2011 to 23,960 last year.

Not only the applications, but also the allocated plans soared. In 2011, 54 percent (or 7,060) of applications were approved. In 2020, more than 68 percent (or 16,425) was approved.

Van Rompuy talks about a “win-win” for both taxpayers and the government. The taxpayer does not have to cough up the amount in one go, and because of the spread, the government has a better chance of actually receiving the amount, it says.
