More and more people are living far away from their workplace. The number of commuters is therefore increasing again. Hamburg in particular appears to be increasingly popular for many.

Around 20.5 million people in Germany commute between their home and their place of work. For 7.1 million employed people, the distance from home to work is even more than 30 kilometers, according to the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR). However, the analysis does not reveal whether they have to travel this distance every day or whether they work a lot from home.

“Among the 80 major German cities, Munich continues to exert the greatest attraction for workers from the surrounding area,” the office reports. In 2023, 454,900 of the employees working in Munich lived outside the city limits. This is followed by Frankfurt am Main (404,800), Hamburg (391,900), Berlin (391,200) and Cologne (305,200).

The districts with the longest average commuting distances are Märkisch-Oderland (Brandenburg), Ludwigslust-Parchim (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), Altmarkkreis Salzwedel (Saxony-Anhalt) and Landsberg am Lech (Bavaria) with 27 kilometers, followed by Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm (Bavaria) with 26 kilometers.

The number of commuters rose by 140,000 after the Corona year 2022 and with the increase in the number of employed people in 2023. The proportion of commuters remained stable at just under 60 percent. The largest increase in commuters was in Hamburg (plus 13,200), Munich (10,900), Berlin (8,800) and Düsseldorf (8,300).
