Significant Increase in Civilian Deaths and Injuries during the War in Ukraine: UN Report

OHCHR believes that the actual number of civilians killed or injured is significantly higher, as many reports of their deaths or injuries still require further confirmation, and there are delays in obtaining information from areas where hostilities continue.

The lack of data especially applies to such cities as Mariupol, Lisichansk, Popasna and Severodonetsk, which were occupied by the Russian army after long and heavy battles, and where many cases of civilian deaths or injuries have been recorded.

According to confirmed UN figures, 4,461 men, 2,672 women, 289 boys and 236 girls have died. The sex of another 29 children and 1,927 adults has not yet been determined.

Among the 17,535 injured, there are 516 boys and 378 girls, as well as another 286 children whose gender has not yet been determined.

The UN report shows that most civilians were killed in the first months of the war. In March 2022, at least 4,168 civilians died, in April – 823, in May – 550, in June – 429, in July – 386. In the first five days of the war, from February 24 to February 28, 2022, 375 civilians died.
