Automatic and manual counts in 2020: Significant increase in bicycle traffic in Berlin

Of the Results report of the bicycle traffic counting stations for 2020 is available – and proves a significant increase in bicycle traffic in Berlin, which continued even during the pandemic restrictions. An increase in bicycle traffic could be registered at almost all (automatic) permanent counting points and also most of the (manually recorded) level points.

Compared to the previous year 2019, the volume of bicycle traffic at the permanent counting stations has increased by around 14 percent overall. At individual permanent counting stations such as Markstrasse, Frankfurter Allee and Prinzregentenstrasse, bicycle traffic has even increased by up to 32 percent.

A clear trend has thus continued since the evaluation with automatic permanent counting stations began in 2017: Since then, there has been an overall increase in bicycle traffic at the automatic permanent counting stations of around 27 percent and at the level points by around 19 percent.

Regine Günther, Senator for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection: “The figures impressively show the growing trend towards cycling in Berlin, which we are strengthening now and in the coming years with the accelerated expansion of the cycling infrastructure – with cycle superhighways, a new cycle network of around 3,000 kilometers , through Germany-wide unique standards. We will raise the cycling infrastructure in Berlin to a previously unknown level – the foundations have been laid, the beginning has been made. More and more Berliners see and experience the progress every day. “

The 2020 annual report on cycling contains the results of twelve level points as well as the – in full operation – 17 automatic permanent counting stations. The data obtained were all checked and processed, and it was also taken into account that some counting stations (such as the one at Oberbaumbrücke) currently do not provide any comparative data to previous years because their counts were restricted or suspended due to construction sites. Starting this year, a total of ten additional automatic counting points are to be added (three of which will initially have displays) in order to be able to better record bicycle traffic in Berlin.
