In the past twenty years, more and more people have started working in our country. Currently, there are more people in work than people without a job. In the second quarter there were 120 people with paid work for every 100 people who did not work.
Twenty years earlier, that ratio was still 96 workers per 100 non-workers, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. During that period, the number of people in work grew faster than the total population, while the number of people without work fell.
Statistics Netherlands usually presents labor participation for the age group of 15 to 75 years. Last quarter, 9.7 million people in that group had paid work and 3.6 million people did not.
Also when young people up to the age of 15 and the over-75s are included among the non-workers, the number of people without a job is 8.1 million. This means that there were 120 workers per 100 non-workers.
According to Statistics Netherlands, in 2007 there were more working people than unemployed for the first time. This remained the case until 2014, during the financial crisis. In that year, the working class temporarily lost the majority. Since then, there are more and more people with paid work compared to the unemployed.
Growth in number of workers
The increase in the past twenty years was mainly due to the growth in the number of people in work. Between 2003 and 2023, there were 1.8 million people in paid work. At the same time, the number of unemployed people fell by about 150,000.
Between the second quarter of 2003 and the same period this year, the number of people aged 45 to 75 in particular increased by about 1.6 million. This was partly due to the growth in the number of over-45s in the population, but also due to the relatively strong increase in labor participation in this age group.
Participation in labor has risen sharply, especially among women. The number of working young people aged 15 to 25 also increased by more than 300,000. Furthermore, the number of working people aged 25 to 45 fell by more than 100,000 because fewer men in that age group are employed.
