The number of people living in poverty in Mexico went from 55.7 to 46.8 million people between 2020 and 2022, which meant a decrease of 8.9 million, reported the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval).
In this way, the percentage of the population in a situation of poverty went from 43.9% to 36.3% in the indicated period, which represents a decrease of 7.6 percentage points.
“In other words, in 2022, approximately 36 out of every 100 people in Mexico had at least one social deprivation and had insufficient monthly income to purchase a food basket made up of food and non-food products to cover their needs,” reported Coneval.

According to CONEVAL, a person is in poverty when they do not have sufficient income to meet their needs and have at least one of the six social deficiencies: educational lag, access to health services, access to social security, quality and spaces. housing, basic housing services, as well as access to nutritious and quality food.
For its part, the number of people in extreme poverty registered a drop of 1.7 million people, going from 10.8 to 9.1 million between 2008 and 2018, with which the percentage of the population in this condition increased from 8.5%. to 7.1% in two years.
Extreme poverty refers to people who have three or more social deprivations described above and do not have enough income to purchase a food basket.
