/ world today news/ A day before the official opening of the monument to Tsar Samuil, a petition started on the Internet against placing the monument in the center of Sofia.
The letter, distributed on the social network Facebook by the executive director of the RiskMonitor foundation Stefan Popov, calls on the mayor of the city Yordanka Fandakova to postpone tomorrow’s official ceremony, which is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and President Rosen Plevneliev.
“Next week, a monument to Tsar Samuil will be unveiled in the immediate vicinity of the Hagia Sophia basilica.” which it is planned to install are suitable.
We do not insist on liquidation of the monument. We insist on postponing and holding a broad discussion about the aesthetic and urban planning expediency of this decision. We believe that the Municipality is obliged to be an active organizer of such a discussion, and not to passively wait for disagreements according to the usual bureaucratic order.

We urge you to be particularly sensitive to the possibility that the project will turn out to be an irreparable stain on the very heart of the city,” the letter reads.
Earlier today, Sofia’s deputy mayor for culture, Todor Chobanov, and the author of the monument, Alexander Haitov, got into a dispute on the topic.
“I have done something that does not exist in the whole world. There is an effect in Samuel’s gaze, which at night, when the lighting is on against him, his eyes will slightly glow, they will phosphoresce,” Haitov pointed out and explained that the goal is to make King Samuel’s eyes look alive.
“The deputy mayor of the Chobanov municipality is worried that the people will not like this and they will not vote for him for a new mandate. If people don’t like it, they’ll spit on me. In this case, someone will become a rezil. For me, however, this effect will be part of the aesthetics of this monument,” he added.
