Signal starts encrypted group video calls

The open source messenger Signal, which focuses on data protection and security, has rolled out a new function: The latest version allows video calls to be made in groups for the first time. The manufacturer promises that the function, like everything else with Signal, is free, private and end-to-end encrypted.

Currently with up to five participants

While phone calls and video calls with individuals have been possible with Signal for a long time, the new function now also includes groups. In view of the corona pandemic and many renewed contact restrictions worldwide, the messenger wants to seize the opportunity and offer a secure alternative to Skype and Zoom.

Group calls are currently limited to five participants, but that should change in the future and the number of participants will continue to increase. The function is available on smartphones and tablets with the latest Signal app as well as on desktop PCs and notebooks that use the corresponding Signal desktop client. Available for Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS and Linux.

Only available in newer group chats

Whether the newly introduced video calls are already working in the desired chat group can be seen from a camera symbol in the upper right corner of the group chat. If the button is pressed, the call starts and all members receive a notification. Participants are shown in a grid view. Alternatively, you can only display the currently active speaker in full screen mode.

The function is only available in group chats that have recently been created or have already been switched automatically by Signal. A few weeks ago Signal introduced a new version of the group chats that support mentions of individual group members and moderation with the help of admins.
