The fire brigade gave the signal fire master around 3.30 pm on Monday for the very large fire in a firelighter factory in Oisterwijk. The fire brigade will continue to extinguish the fire in the Noord-Brabant municipality in the coming hours, the safety region reports. The brand new factory building has been lost.
The fire broke out in the night from Sunday to Monday. The foam extinguishing system in the Fire-Up factory initially managed to extinguish the fire, but the fire flared up again on Monday morning. At around 9 a.m., flames were shooting out of the roof. There was also a lot of smoke. Around 10.45 am, local residents received an NL-Alert with the call to stay indoors.
The fire brigade scaled up and closed a number of streets in Oisterwijk to roll out hoses. This used to remove fire water from waterways. A hose also came to lie over the track, so that trains between Tilburg and Boxtel were temporarily unable to run. Train traffic resumed at around 2.30pm.
No harmful substances were found in the soot particles that were released during the fire. “The soot particles are of course not clean,” warns the safety region. Local residents are advised to wash away ashes that have ended up on cars or garden furniture in the area, for example, with warm water and soap.
Municipality initiates ‘in-depth investigation’
The municipality of Oisterwijk will conduct “in-depth investigation” into the fire. Mayor Hans Janssen says he is not afraid to take “depending on the results of the investigation far-reaching steps in the context of permitting”. The factory could lose permits.
It is not the first time a fire has broken out at the factory. In September 2019, this happened four times in a few days at the Fire-Up factory. Then cubes might have started to heat and ignite. At the time, the fire service expressed its concern about the situation at the factory.
The cause of the fire Monday is not yet clear.
