Sightings of ‘Land of Atlantis’ on the Java Coastal Toll Project

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaThe 27 km Semarang – Demak Toll Road will pass a lot of coastal routes that cross areas with the land destroyed phenomenon or the ‘atlantic phenomenon’. This toll road is also famous for its sea wall construction and when it is operational, this toll road will cross an area that is heavily inundated by water on the north coast of Java (Pantura).

The toll road is expected to be able to further complement the connectivity of the toll road network and the main sections on the north side of Java Island which are targeted for complete completion by 2024. The construction of the Semarang – Demak Toll Road specifically Section 2 has reached 80.63% progress and is targeted for completion by the end of 2022.

This toll road is integrated with the Semarang City Sea Wall. It is hoped that after completion it will further support the growth of the new Economic Center in Central Java Province.

This toll road will also function as a tidal flood barrier, as well as overcome floods and puddles which have been a problem for the capital city of Central Java Province which often occur around Semarang.

The toll road with a length of 27 km has two sections, namely Section 1 (Semarang/Kaligawe-Sayung) with a length of 10.69 km, the government’s portion is targeted for completion in 2024. Meanwhile, Section 2 (Sayung-Demak) is 16.31 km long, which is the portion of the Toll Road Business Entity (BUJT) PT Pembangunan Perumahan Semarang Demak.

In addition, the Semarang – Demak Toll Road will have 2 interchanges (SS), namely the SS Sayung and the SS Demak. The construction of the Semarang – Demak Toll Road also uses domestic products in the form of precast concrete produced by PT WIKA Beton.

Quoted from the PUPR Ministry’s BPJT page, Thursday (19/5), the construction of the Semarang-Demak Toll Road is integrated with a sea wall with an embankment structure above the sea which is also reinforced by a 17-layer thick bamboo mat.

In addition to the bamboo mat system, strengthening of soil conditions is also carried out by installing pre-fabricated vertical diverting material or PVD and carrying out loading using sea sand material taken using the Trailing Suction Hopping Dredger or TSHD tool.

In addition, to minimize the negative impact on the environment from the construction of the Semarang – Demak Toll Road, the Ministry of PUPR is also working with the Regional Government to prepare a mangrove land relocation program around the construction of Section 1 of the Semarang – Demak Toll Road, the Semarang – Sayung section. There are 3 locations of mangrove areas to be relocated with a total area of approximately 46 hectares.

The conservation efforts of the mangrove area aim to maintain the function of the mangrove forest as a habitat for flora and fauna on the north coast of Java and protect the coastline, including reducing the risk of abrasion.

The Land Phenomenon of ‘Atlantis’ Destroyed

The Semarang-Demak Toll Road is one of the National Strategic Projects (PSN) whose construction is accelerated and is targeted for completion before 2024.

However, what is still an obstacle at this time is land acquisition due to the phenomenon of land being destroyed or land changing shape due to natural events, because it is located on this toll road route. So that the calculation and acquisition process became an obstacle because the location of the land was already submerged by water.

The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has also conveyed directions regarding the acceleration of the construction of the Semarang – Demak toll road, which is currently still hampered by the issue of destroyed land in the toll route.

“The Central Java Provincial Government and the Ministry of ATR/BPN together with the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy will soon complete efforts to accelerate the settlement of destroyed land, both in regulations and technical implementation,” Airlangga said in a statement, quoted on Tuesday (17/5/2022).
